The Pacific Palisades Rebuild honors three generations of family connection to this neighborhood. Working within a modest budget, we designed a home grounded in essential values: abundant natural light as a foundation for wellbeing, energy efficiency as an ethical commitment to the future, and spaces that nurture the emotional lives of its inhabitants.

Each volume rises to a different height, choreographing how daylight moves through the home from morning to evening. The angled forms serve a dual purpose: welcoming low winter sun into the main living areas while shading against harsh summer heat. This geometry also generates intimate outdoor spaces that flow directly from each interior room, expanding the home's living area into the landscape.

The home's compact footprint unfolds into a carefully composed sequence of outdoor rooms, each shaped by the rhythms of sun and season. The main living volume opens on opposite sides to a morning terrace nestled in greenery and a shaded evening courtyard for lingering meals. Private viewing gardens extend from the bedrooms, while a rear patio shelters an exercise pool beneath a spreading live oak.

The main living space is angled to choreograph light throughout the day. In summer, the orientation shields against midday heat while inviting the softer glow of early morning and fading afternoon light. In winter, midday sun reaches deep into the interior, warming the space during cooler months. The design honors the distinct character of each moment—the quiet light of dawn, the golden retreat of evening, summer's bright intensity, and winter's low arc across the sky.

Summer Soltice- the angled volumes keep the hot mid-day sun out of the main space in the summer months.

Winter Soltice- the angled volumes allow the mid-day sun deep into the main space to provide passive heating throughout the winter months.
